I feel you can't ever be "hopeless" if you have people who depend on you, no matter how shit your life is and your wagecuckery is, you'll trudge through it if there's someone you care about needing you to do it.
But having nobody around that needs you can make an okayish life feel hopeless.
Humans would rather feel exploited over feeling like a burden.
