Oh I used to love Dragonlance.

I actually did a reread of the first two books somewhat recently. 1 was fun enough, pretty much a pure DmD campaign and BOY HOWDY do the Hickmans Mormon influences make themselves apparent. They're not preachy or anything but they are also not subtle. But its fun. Winter Night the second book is way better.I still need to read the last book Spring Dawning which I'll probably get around too after I finish some other stuff. I remember also liking the twins trilogy so I'll check that out too.

>the first dragonlance game is fucking terrible (champions of krynn) but the rest are good.

Boy you have no idea how much that depressed me as a kid. Loved those books. When I saw there was a game I damn near lost my shit. And it was terrible. It was one of the first times I ever realized how bad a game could be.

And many fantasy heroes have such humble origins. But then there's a call to adventure and you find yourself in the thick of it. It's all part of the heroes journey. And even then you can just as easily have your players be knights, soldiers, mercenaries, hunters, mage adepts, clerics in training etc.

Meeting in a tavern is fine. The problem with guilds is that they functionally become a quest board and instead of having a genuine adventure you're running around doing side quests with no purpose.
