"anime" are just Japanese cartoons. There's a distinction between it and Danhua (Chinese animation) for a reason. Of course they don't call anime "anime" and refer to it as regular animation/cartoons like we do. The Chinese have been upping their game lately although I don't see them overtaking the Japanese when it comes to animated entertainment (despite how much slop there is released nowadays)
