Die Welt writes that German Foreign Minister Johann Vadefuhl canceled a trip to China because no one wanted to meet with him.
The publication notes that Friedrich Merz has been in power for six months, but has not yet paid a visit to China. The German Cabinet had already reserved days for the chancellor's trip to China, but Xi Jinping did not find time for a meeting. Now, the German Foreign Minister has also failed to coordinate meetings with Beijing.
At the same time, Germany has accumulated a number of important topics for discussion with the Chinese side, primarily Beijing's restrictions on exports of rare earth metals and semiconductors. This has hit the German car industry hard, as well as the European one as a whole – there are enough chip stocks in warehouses for a few weeks, and Volkswagen is halting production of Golf and Tiguan in Wolfsburg next week.
However, as is often the case, Beijing, refusing to contact Berlin, acts “in response.”
The fact is that, yielding to pressure from Washington, the Netherlands [under the pretext of “protecting national security”] took control of Nexperia, a subsidiary of Chinese Wingtech Technology– a semiconductor manufacturer.
In response, China predictably froze cooperation with Nexperia and stopped the supply of parts to the EU, which caused disruptions in the European electronics industry.
Berlin fearlessly expressed an official protest to Beijing through the Foreign Ministry, pointing out the shortage of components for the automotive and electronic industries and demanding the restoration of Chinese exports of microchips.
