No it's just because the characters are fucking ugly.
In fact it's amazing how Borderlands has developed their whole setting into one of the most unappealing things imaginable. Even with series that I don't give a shit about I can usually find something interesting or cool about them but quite literally everything about the world of Borderlands has become just annoying or lame.
