Did some maffs using Deepstate numbers for territory advanced and the AFU's numbers for Russian casualties. T1 is the 1st third and so on.

Russia is fighting this more efficiently in terms of manpower per unit land advanced this year than it used to last year.

I think this has happened for a couple of reasons. The major one is that Russia hasn't been involved in as much urban warfare. Last year they were fighting in Avdiivka, Toretsk, Chasiv Yar among others. The latter continues to this day.
This year there's only Kupiansk and Pokrovsk. And the failed attempt on Sumy. Every other Russian offensive has been in fields and villages which comparatively fewer men are required to be burnt to push through.
