If you really wanted peace and is a normal fag, you'd tune out on his rambling like radio. But if you do care about the subject, you tune in to what they have to say, there is still no peace disrupted. The submissive strategy is listen and ask. The dominant strategy is speak and answer.
But like him, you do have something different to say to him, something to argue, be on the dominant role to assert, but unable to formulate in time or counter with your own questions, and present yours without able to answer their questions. And there is nothing wrong with spacing out the conversation with scilence especially for the listener just received an answer.
