>The discourses questioning Sudanese Arabness grew out of a political rejection of Sudanese Arab hegemony, and the attempts to distance and isolate Sudanese Arabs from an African ethnic, cultural, etc. context. This is directly related to issues of racism in Sudan (and debatably the legacy of Funj-era slavery), and the state preference for Arab culture, language, etc. at the cost of Sudanese non-Arabs.
It seems the Sudan civil war was caused by a woke style levelling of Sudanese "Arabs" (picrel, I think? They are much darker than other arabs) who had previously been the "masterrace" in Sudan. The late 20th century African nationalists tried to forcibly submerge the North Sudanese "Arab" population into a broader, "African" Sudanese identity, taking down the "Arabic" power structure that had dated centuries back to some sort of slave regime with "Arabs" on top and blacks as slaves. The "Arabs" violently resisted and are now wiping out as many non-"Arabs" as they can. But I think if these "Arabs" went to Syria or whatever they themselves would be treated like niggers. Anyway, it's an interesting parallel to what is occuring racially in the West.
