Tibet's relationship with China has varied throughout history. While it was part of the Qing dynasty from 1720 to 1912, it later became effectively independent. The People's Republic of China (PRC) reasserted control in 1950. This occurred after attempts by the Tibetan Government to gain international recognition, efforts to modernize its military, negotiations between the Government of Tibet and the PRC, and a military conflict in the Chamdo area of western Kham in October 1950.[8][9] The Chinese government calls the series of events the "Peaceful Liberation of Tibet",[10] despite several thousand casualties being reported by Chinese generals throughout the invasion.[11][12][13][14] The events are known as the "Chinese invasion of Tibet" by the Central Tibetan Administration[15] and by the Tibetan diaspora.[16]
