It's pretty simple. You get nine innings, and each inning the teams switch between hitting the ball and being on the field. The team at bat wants to hit the ball. Then they run around the bases. They score if they make a full lap.

The fielding team wants to stop this by making opposing players out. They do this by trying to get the batter to miss their swings, or by catching the ball and throwing it to their guy at one of the bases before a runner can reach it. When they get three outs, the inning is over and they switch.
