Some readers will gild the lily and point out that (in traditional Rider–Waite decks) two of the five cups are still upright—not spilled. To them, this suggests all is not lost, that the possibility for romance is still there—it may just be hard to see.

But I've always read this card as the querent being focused on what isn't working and, as a consequence, ending up in a perpetual state of mourning.
