I watched Dancing Star The Stage 1 yesterday.
It was pretty incredible. I have more than a casual interest in theater (I was in a drama club at Uni), but I had never seen a 2.5D play before. I was blown away by how they use screens and projectors for stage effects. They've really managed to translate transformation sequences into 3D and it works well to give the actors time to change dress, and to generally reproduce the feel of the anime.
It wouldn't surprise me if we start seeing tech like this making it to Broadway, as a way to reduce costs, if not as a novel means of expression.
Pic is probably my favorite scene: The Choreographer really tried to mask them and we got an iconic protag reply. It showcases how well they've managed to translate Precure into a stage show.
It makes me wonder what the Sailor Moon shows are like. Has anyone here watched them?
Also, the shorter format is in itself an interesting novelty. It's like getting 25 episodes condensed into 2 hours, so they have to be much more deliberate with how they introduce the main characters while moving the plot forward. They definitely succeeded in making it an engaging 'movie-like' plot, but a side effect of cutting the fluff is that I don't feel nearly as connect to the characters as I would in a real season. Cure Soul and Cure Kagura are probably my favorites; Cure Soul just seem like such a nice guy and it's funny seeing him try to rein in Kagura. Soul's scene with the teapot is also incredible. (That being said, I can't even remember their civilian names.)
