Like in theory there should be another group firing or harassment with the horses or something instead of just charging into the enemy lines. if they were going to just charge right for the guys they would usually shoot first to intentionally kick up smoke. usually when someone did do a retarded charge like this it was either due to the general being retarded, see the bongs at cowpens or out of desperation, see picket's charge at Gettysburg
