You can get relatively good results with dark schemes that abuse gloss

Phil kelly's jormungandr is mostly simple black plus gloss, with a few lines of yellow and blue mucoses, concentrating on fancier designs on just the important beasties and the result is brilliant, pictures online don't make it justice

alternatively you could try something very easy with a colorshift paint instead of pure black, and you can shake things up a bit by painting the skin on the hands, head, neck and in-between the ribs and joints in a white color and then painted with a contrast of your choice
