All they've done is advance in ways that bring them no closer to actually winning.

Meanwhile, every day is another 1-2 thousand dead Russians, which DOES bring Ukraine closer to victory.

This is literally what it means to "win every battle but lose the war".
And Russia isn't even winning every battle.
