War-era propaganda on the allied side was that carrots were good for eyesight and specifically were good for night vision. This is of course false and was just trying to get people to eat the readily available food by leveraging their fear of enemies in the night.
But the household belief that carrots have almost mystical sight-aiding properties survives to this day. Just like how early energy-saving measures in South Korea now lead people there to believe that sleeping in the same room as a fan that is currently running will suffocate you to death.
