The natives were part of the colonization. Spain never could have conquered the Aztecs and the rest of the Americas without the Tlaxcaltecs. There were only a couple thousand Spaniards compared to millions of natives, and they had kingdoms and urbanized communities, not at all like the primitive nomad injuns of the north.
