I hate that "meme faces" became a stupid term for people who hate cartoony art because while I don't dislike his work, Merrivius pretty accurately represents a modern cartoonist tendency of treating "funny faces" the way /v/ MSPaint comics do - as punchlines and/or generally detached from the "normal" art as opposed to just being a natural part of the characters' visual acting. Manga/anime can do this too and 4chan might have picked up on it due to the site's Japan focus but the best cartoonists like Monkey Punch, Yuasa or Imaishi don't really do that - at most it'll be an extra goofy face to punctuate a joke but the "normal" art is still consistently goofy.
