I don't deadlift often, but using a trap bar is safer than a straight bar, you're not bending over and forwards, it's more of a squat action.

It's the fixed position of the bar that gives me injuries, Same thing happens when I use machines - lots of tendon/ligament injuries over the years. There's no room for movements outside of the fixed range of motion of the machine. Since I went to almost exclusive free weights I've been injury free for a few years now.

See above. I'm too old to do ego lifts anymore. I get in the gym, get the job done, and leave. A power lifter I know gave me the dumbbell / decline bench tip to take the strain off my shoulders when I told him about the shoulder injury. Works like a charm.
