kmt = "black land". Obviously this refers to the soil, but they would rather pretend that it referred to skin.
There were probably many people in ancient egypt whom we would consider black, black-adjacent, or mixed (consider afro-arabs today) but they certainly didn't think of race the same way we do (duz?)
as I understand it the harlem renaissance and negritude movements encouraged people to take pride in their african heritage, but at the time they concieved of africa as being divided into Egypt and ungabungaland. Even today most people think of Africa that way, especially uneducated people, even though there are plenty of interesting and worthwhile subsaharan cultures to learn about. But Egypt got dat gold n sheeit, cash money niggaz
It's like if the slavs enslaved by muslims were freed, then took pride in Greco-Roman civilization because they didn't know about anything else
I mean sure, Egypt is a cool civilization, which did begin (and end) in Upper Egypt, so deeper into the african interior. But if I was a black guy in the west today I'd rather take pride in the regional cultures that my ancestors were taken from.
Complicating this, of course, is the fact that many people don't know that information, but with modern genetic testing it's possible to find out.
It's also very nuanced and complicated history, which is a lot less immediately gratifying than yelling about how you wuz kangz and whatnot
