Of course longbows work and targets can be hit with them, but when given the choice most people today will not pick it for hunting. It could've been the reverse, but it's not and that tells something. Longbows were commonly used for hunting during late 19th - early 20th ct. in America solely due to the cultural background. There already existed a sport-oriented bowmaking industry in the UK with all the paraphernalia while other bows were practically unheard of. Their ethics were also dubious by today's standards, they often shot from farther than 50-60 yards with multiple arrows until at least one stuck in, "putting some wood in the air" as they used to say. IMHO at least some richer people during the middle ages probably hunted in exactly the same way, fire at will at first sight and come what may.
