I grew up in the south suburbs of Chicago. Aldi was one of our go to stores. Small, no frills, cheap prices, did our own bagging, had to pay a quarter for your cart.
Where I live now in the PNW I don't think Aldi could succeed. We have places like "Grocery Outlet" which is pretty much the Aldi strategy but more regular store style. I like them because their layout reminds me of grocery stores from the 80's.
