At first like everyone I lifted to attract more attractive women. I never needed the gym as I had gfs before I ever started working out but I figured to get the best women I had to myself be the best version of myself.
Then I hit 25 and met my current wife, the first time I met a woman who valued me simply for who I am so then I kept lifting because I have adhd and I like routines.
Somewhere along the way it transitioned to the only way I could push myself physically. My sports days are long gone, I play casual sports with friends now and then but for the most part I have no reason to really push myself physically unless I am in the gym. So I still get that sense of physical exhaustion on the regular when I push myself hard at the gym (something I think is very important for the development and maintenance of a healthy male mind)
