It was deliberate and form of ritualised sacrificial behavior we see on this board every day when they use a train or film themselves trying to ride across a gushing torrent.

There is some aspect of it where they have to give themselves the possibity that their god intervenes and saves them. They are never looking. Maybe it hits or doesn't. Maybe the torrent misses them or doesn't. Maybe the engines start again or don't.

The crashing into that bridge outside Baltimore was similar. They were hoping to sink the ship too.
