Why are you assuming it was any different for the Vita? Sony was never explicitly a pro-otaku company, either, and the moment feminists told them to jump, they said "how high?". Nintendo at least held out for a few years. The Vita was only an otaku console because every otaku developer back then already settled on Playstation as their platform of choice since PC was still mostly dead, Nintendo was still seen as the "children's company" and after a brief flirting with Xbox, they started getting rejected (OG Gal*Gun) and the Xbone was an unmitigated disaster.
