You need to look beyond the public systems itself and the net benefit to the public, and the benefits from there.
Example: Giving poorniggers free healthcare is bad, right? But if you do not give it to them, they still seek emergency care. This is still paid for by someone. It costs much, much more. Everyone pays for this. So giving them free healthcare benefits everyone by seeking treatment earlier and general good health is cheaper than poor health. And then you factor in the economic damage of a pandemic, and holy fuck, it's printing money to help the poor.
Similar logic can be applied to UBI - offering enough money to survive and make sure everyone has access to basic systems, and is guaranteed survival and suddenly this "high cost" ends up saving dumptrucks of money.
