He played Mr. Moto, a heroic spy, in a series of adventure/spy films named after the character, was the love interest in Three Strangers, played a guilt ridden criminals in both Crime and Punishment and Der Verlorene, played a brow beaten drunk doctor forced to perform experimental surgery jn the horor comedy Arsenic and Old Lace, played a patriotic Frenchman in Passage to Marseille, the sophisticated and gay Joel Cairo in The Maltese Falcon, played a petty crook who lucked out and got his hands on letters of transit in Casablanca, the biologist Conseil in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, was Brankov in the musical Silk Stockings (in which he sang and danced), and had nunerous other roles where he didn't play a creepy villain. Hell, even in The Man Who Knew Too Much, his character, though menscing at times when he needed to be, was sophisticated, happy go lucky, and polite. He took great pains to break out of the box he was put in and was abke to expand to doing comedies, musicals, dramas, and adventure films where he didn't have to play villains.
