I don't know how other people just casually hit 30+ soak. I can only get that with a troll with titanium bone lacing and a riot shield and an armor jacket and a bunch of other shit. Dodge is better than soak anyway (assuming we're talking about 5e; in 4e it quickly becomes impossible to actually dodge anything, which is one reason I like 5e a lot more). In any case, any extra amount of soak you can get away with wearing is always better than not, but how much that is depends greatly on where you are and what you're doing (assaulting a gang hideout in the barrens means you can bust out the combat armor and riot shield, tailing someone in downtown Seattle not so much).
