I will never cut myself while shaving and a few times i used a hand forged razor i made myself. It was shit but i made it. Had to stop using it because i hated how it couldn't really hold the razor edge very well because I didn't use some razor steel.
I really don't know how some need shaving cream or gels, i just use soap mostly to avoid the cut hairs from sticking on my skin, for easier clean up.
