You do understand that these trade-ups require cases, right? And cases are a finite resource? Cases from a particular collection do not drop forever, they gradually raise in price as they get older, stop dropping and get opened. Cases will be opened to obtain weapon skins because these various knives and gloves belong to "collections" unique to those cases. Observe:

This is all a massive scheme by Valve to make people open as many cases as possible, putting money into SCM, and draining the case reserves that were stagnant in value due to their trade-up contents being mediocre. Now that every case has a new trade-up value tied to it in the form of knives and gloves, this is going to move a lot of money.
