Waaay back in 2008, before your kind browsed 4chan, reddit was surprisingly close to 4chan in userbase, sans "NIGGER" and "FAGGOT". A lot of /v/ projects got posted directly to /r/gaming to gain traction. Gamergate was the flashpoint for active division between the two sites, and the 2016 election cycle cemented the disdain for plebbit that you see today.
