Most religious people don't even really believe in their religion they just either
1.fear death and desperately want to believe that there is life after it
2.want an excuse to be hateful and cruel towards people different from them/want to believe these people will suffer after death.
3.want an excuse for why their puritanical nature and virginity is cool and based instead of nerdy and pathetic.
4.all of the above
This is why they so openly and without shame ignore every part of their holy text that doesn't have something to do with one of those 3. They have no use for loving each other like they love themselves or realizing that the love of money is the root of all evil. Those things run counter to their fear and hatred based hierarchal worldview and is therefore useless to them, even if it comes directly from the God they claim to worship.
