older zoomer here, for me it's because despite phones making leaps and bounds the quality in calls is still fucking terrible and you can't understand shit half the time. texting and reading is just that much more convenient i think.
i'm pretty biased though, having worked a customer service job where you can't hear or understand crap when people are giving you important information. fucking hated it.
