Seriously, I don't understand why people act like the whole point of the story is to find out Knight's identity and what kind of object Ralsei is. Like, we pull off the helmet Scooby-Doo style, confirm it's Dess/Carol/Rudy/Asgore/Milk Checker, and then just go home. "Yep, mystery solved, nothing else to do here."

And there are a litany of reasons he might want to keep it a secret, for the sake of his family and to avoid exposing himself to the Player and the rest of the Fun Gang.

If you seriously believe this shows he moved on then you do not understand Asriel's character whatsoever. In what world is Dess being completely scrubbed from Asriel's life a sign of Asriel having moved on? Dess is lost in the dark because of something Kris did, and made Kris promise to find her.
Asriel did something out of grief for Dess that put the world out of balance and generated the shadow crystals.
Carol is assisting Kris in finding Dess. She is coordinating with Kris and a third party to open Dark Fountains to help find Dess. Notably the Knight Crew DOES NOT WANT to start the Roaring, and is very particular about making sure Kris has the Soul on hand in the Dark World to seal the fountains, kill the Titans, and stop the Roaring from happening.
Importantly: THE KNIGHT IS NOT REAL. The entity we see in the Dark World is not a person but an artificial thing being controlled by the third member of the Knight Crew to lure the Heroes through the Dark Worlds. This is the one who speaks in red text on the phone who repeatedly encourages Carol and Kris to not allow Susie to get the code from the guitar. The deer features and bat are a misdirection. Carol's swords are misdirection.
Kris, Ralsei, and Susie ARE the heroes and will fulfill the prophecy.
