Had the Russian Nord Stream pipelines remained operating, this is how much money Russia would have earned to wage the war with them: about $16 billion per year (the number is very approximate).
Here is how the number was calculated and what kinds of weapons Russia could have financed with this money:
The operator company, Nord Stream AG, does not publicly report its financial results. Therefore, no exact numbers are available publicly.
However, using materials from accessible sources and journalistic investigations, we can get an approximate picture.
Let’s base our calculations on the last pre-full-scale war year.
According to an official press release from Nord Stream AG, the volume of natural gas transported through the Nord Stream pipeline in 2021 was 59.2 billion cubic meters.
The average price of Russian pipeline-exported gas in 2021 reached $274 per 1,000 cubic meters, according to calculations published by the Vedomosti publication, based on data from the Federal Customs Service of Russia.
! Thus, in 2021, Nord Stream might have generated $16.22 billion (precisely $16,220,800,000).
In total, Russia exported 203.5 billion cubic meters of gas in 2021, earning about $55 billion.
Now let's convert these figures into weapons and military equipment - the resources Russia used to start an unprovoked full-scale war and, from February 24, 2022, to the present, has used to kill peaceful Ukrainians.
Let's imagine a scenario in which the entire sum, without deductions, theft, or other "expenses," went exclusively to the military-industrial complex, and was spent solely on producing a specific type of equipment. The approximate cost per unit of each weapon or vehicle is given in parentheses.
