Without a genuine spiritual transformation, I believe it is hard and in many cases borderline impossible. However, my experience is people coming from the worst background imaginable crack and heroin addicted whores living on the street, murderers from organized crime with horrific abuse in childhood etc. After they became Christian through different programs, spiritual healing, deliverance, etc and not just some magic words thinking you are automatically a fully reborn Christian, they became like a literal new person. Sometimes it is hard to see that they are the same person with looking at photos. Same with al-Qaeda fighters turning to Christ. Even the eyes changed. None of them had any relapses and all of them became great parents and productive members of society. However, those who did not manage to forgive, they were not many, did not have such a good success rate, so it looks like forgiveness, including themselves, is a major key to reclaiming their lives. In many ways, they are happier, more mature, and understand more how good their lives are, compared to those born in the church.
