I wouldn't know because I don't keep up with avatarfag drama and ignore them most of the time.
That being said, Kyoko is controversial to some because of that scene, her cold attitude, and huge amount of screentime. Personally she can take all the screentime she wants from smells bad, smells like chlorine, and hair smells bad. I "like" her, but in the same I "like" water or vanilla ice cream. Never got the Mary Sue criticism, either.

I'll admit, unless you're either one of those, love bratty femdom(me), or are a sizefag(also me) there's very little to like about Hiyoko.
Her and Miu both feel like they just wanted Toko shittalking in the class trials again. Her backstory about all the shit that goes on in her wealthy family, although entertaining, does not an interesting character make. Most dangans are tropes in some way, but Hiyoko is one of them where it's very obvious what she is there for and what specific type of fan she's catering to.
