Before it, I had tried to read VNs a few times and always got bored quickly and gave up. Years passed and I got older, and then one day while on a thread on /a/ an anon mentioned it to me, saying the protagonist was a chad and posting a picture of him choking Rui. Intrigued, I got it. I was nonplussed by the college setting and unimpressed by the art and music, but the writing managed to somehow hook me early on, (even annoyed as I was by the state of the protagonist) and I got the Yua route in a few days. Then the rest. Having finished one VN, I was encouraged and decided to go for more. I picked up Clannad entirely at random- the name just stood out to me, that's all. I knew nothing about it except how it looked and what the synopsis said. Initially, the art style and the odd ethereal music and the general depressive state of things (Tomoya is even worse off than Nao despite having a far more dignified personality) put me off, but I grew fond of it. I have done about half the routes so far.
