60% of the appeal of Batman and his world in any and all incarnations is the combination of pulp detective sensibilities of the 1930's with gothic melodrama of the Victorian era. The Burton films are still the only ones to fully commit to the visual language of Batman comics without compromises. Jack Nicholson's Joker is still the closest live action incarnation visually to the classic image of the Joker since he first appeared in 1940.
