The first to films aren't pointless. The existence of Skynet and John Connor only happen because of time travel. The issue with all three films is that no matter your choice in ending, the Existence of Skynet came from somewhere else instead of the chip inside the first T-800. That's a problem both T2 and T3 created. T1 created the problem of John Connor being the son of Kyle Reese who isn't even born until after the nuclear apocalypse.
