Starmer says Ukraine is fighting for 'same values' as WWII allies

The prime minister says Ukraine is fighting for the same values as the Allies in World War II.

Sir Keir Starmer was speaking at a reception marking the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, when the Allies officially defeated Japan.

"I sat on this terrace this very morning with President Zelenskyy, who is fighting for the same values as we were fighting for,” he told attendees, who included veterans.

“And so when we say never forget, we must pass on the stories of those who have gone before us."

It comes as President Trump suggested European leaders may be invited to a second meeting if his meeting with Putin tomorrow is successful.

The prime minister, alongside the French president and German chancellor, has been a key player in a European coalition trying to forge peace for Ukraine.
