i went to japan and didn't expect anyone to speak english to me
many did, or did their best and i always had my translator app ready with what i wanted before I had to ask something more complicated than dumping coins into the change machine and saying "please, thank you, goodbye" in japanese to be polite
i shut my mouth in public transport

saw some punk band in a basement and he was visibly really happy when i showed him my phone to thank him for the show and had a hard to follow very slow conversation with him and then he took a selfie with me


i came in expecting very polite but xenophobic, but it was manageable and even had some fun contact with people

younger people sometimes had very texan accents almost and spoke english a lot better
