Back in the 70s-80s you could sell it under the pretense of it being an economy car- light, small engine, small frontal area = good aero, just enough car to get you places without cargo, like a motorcycle but without having to gear up. Nowadays economy means hybrid or electric, which means weight and size, while sporty means at very least 200hp (and people will still complain that it's not 500hp for 20k), and everyone wants a practical boot, so a small mid-engined car doesn't make sense, very few people would buy it.
