The cylinders people were seeing were the rear canisters for some of the gas mask heads.
There's ONE backback that has a different style of canister hanging below it that has a tab that very clearly looks like it connects to the wires like you'd expect but, again, there's only the one on a sprue for 6 dudes. I suspect they planned the backpack to be universal to every gun/cable but - forgetting every guy would need one - only put the one on the sprue.
I'll try to build one today after I get off work to make sure.

I think it'd be easy enough to leave off the hull-mounted gun. The canvas gun wrap thing at the back just attaches to a recess in the plate you can milliput over.
I don't mind the front cannon since it sorta gives me Saint-Chammond vibes, like someone took a moon rover or cargo truck and tried to jury-rig a gun onto it.
