Yes tyrian purple was made from farmed sea snails, where the Roman purple and red comes from. The rulers would manage the farms to make sure they were the only ones who could wear those colors. A similar purple can be made by treating a type of lichen with ammonia (but they didn't use ammonia back then).
Also they still use beetles to make red dye and natural red food color. Just look up what carmine is.
