It is pretty simple to recursively import folders, your files won't be deleted and you don't have to import everything at once, you can also go folder by folder and assign tags to the swathes of files as you import them separately in groups
And should you decide it's not for you you can also always re-export the files with them named by their content hash with a so-called "sidecar file" text file with the same name as the respective file from your database to then import and continue using your tags in another program or even an online/offline/selfhosted service like some booru after doing some basic learning about scripts and figuring out a basic ghetto setup to jam the tags along with the file they belong to into that new program/interface one after the other
