Not sure if it's universal, but at the very least Western entertainment seems to be stuck in a death spiral where they try to push new projects every once in a while relying on older properties for reliable profits, but basically none of those projects turn a profit because the higher-ups either intervene too much, or the devs/creators themselves aren't competent enough on their own to create a big project without relying on shitty political writing or silly gimmicks that don't get anyone invested in it long-term.

Even when a project does do well, they'll usually shelf all efforts towards building off it (until they think they can capitalize off the nostalgia for it) unless the project makes significantly more money than nostalgic products make, which pretty much never happens because most people only want to consume things they know they'll like, and that results in them only spending money on things that grant nostalgia, things like gachas that feed their sexual desires and things that they're already playing (Roblox, Fortnite, etc.).
