Marx and Engels argued that socialism would take different forms because it was dependent on the social and economic context of whatever society it took place in. That's why he argued socialism, in the United States, would most likely be possible through a democratic path. And that was somewhat true. FDR and LBJ's social programs were a result of the large amounts of unionization in America society at the time pushing for those things. Republicans were even supportive of unions.
