Trying to cross the Dnipro right now would be incredibly costly. They managed to capture Kerson without any problem in the early days of the war because they marched right into Kiev, and this forced Ukraine to remobilise their troops to defend the capital. But as everyone remembers, the original strike force was only 100k soldiers, and they were dispersed all over the place. If they tried to maintain Kerson, they would be defeated there, and it would be humiliating.
I believe their plan is to just fight where Ukraine can't defend, no more than 5 towns at a time, with few losses, while the Ukrainians are demoralised because they can't win a single battle and being draughted means a death sentence.
At some point the Ukrainian army will be mentally defeated, and Russia will be able to cross the Dnipro unopposed and drive straight into Odesa.
