The retcon tree fucked it all up since it removed the stakes of his defection and the closure with related characters. They then tied him randomly to Sumeru and now randomly to Durin, another manlet who shouldn't even exist as a character.
They don't know what to do with him when the reality is we should've just fought him as we were going to in 2.5 or so, had him betrayed by Dottore or something then and presumably dead, then just had him as an off-the-grid Harbinger hunter.
